Stage: 3
Session number: 18
Average n-back: 9.35
I’m starting to think I’m not doing this right…
I’ve had a lot of mind chatter doing this training since I picked up the course–now doing it consistently again after taking about a month off from mid-May to mid-June. About Session 17 the thoughts became so distracting that I hit the stop button in the middle of my session and basically just yelled “Enough!!!” When I sat back down my performance went to another level.
I’m telling everybody this for two reasons:
1. I know this is working because I’ve seen the improvement, particularly from being stuck between stages 6 and 7 to skyrocketing to sessions as high as 11. More importantly I’m appreciating the discipline I have to have to quiet my mind, though I obviously still have lapses.
2. The downside is that I don’t know if I’m cheating myself or not.
I hope I’m not spoiling it for everyone else when I say this (not that I’m the smartest person here by any measure), but my strategies have basically involved chunking the squares into groups or patterns, and only clicking on the squares I know are n-positions back from my recall. Otherwise, I don’t answer. Am I cheating myself or is this the idea behind the process? To force our brains to adapt however they best can to meet the challenge at hand?
I’d like to believe I’m falling into the latter category, but who knows. Any thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Stage: 3
Session number: 2
Average n-back: 2.55
Second day today on stage 3. Performance was pretty fluid at N-2, but N-3 is quite a struggle with remembering the sequences. Scores have marginally improved from day 1 to day 2 though, so hopefully there would be more gains in the next few days.

Hi, so I’ve read the recommended training schedule and I was wondering, if the training monitor has me set to start stage 2 after just one session (rather than after the 4 to 5 per week), is it okay to start stage 2 on my next training session, just as the training monitor suggests? Thank you!

I got everything correct for the first 16 rounds or so, then I actually almost physically felt my brain being exercise and worn out, and I got a couple incorrect at N=6. I’m really liking these exercises

The N=2 block goes usually well, but I cant find a strategy to master N=3. I get confused pretty quickly.

I guess there are alot of rocket engineers, brain surgeons and quantum physicists on here because I can’t seem to get completely past level 2, even at session 12, while everyone else is progressing nicely.
Any helpful suggestions for a stupid masters in literature student trying to prep for the lit subject area test? I’m horrible at math and suffer from pharmaceutically-induced short term memory problems (due to medication for depression) along with a mild case of ADD. I can tell this site is helping, but I’m also frustrated.

Stage: 3
Session number: 14
Average n-back: 3.85
I’m sort of stuck on n=4, back and forth between n=5 and n=3. If I’m tired, it’s a bit more 3 and if I’m energized there are a few n=5′s thrown in.
I am curious what the top level for each stage is. I’m at 9 now on Double Ahead and Double Switchback, but I hobble through them. I’ve seen one person posting about a level 10. Is there a higher one? What’s the highest on stage 3 and stage 4? Just curious!
I achieve the sixes on up in the first two stages by imagining the visual flip linked to two letters at a time. The visual enhances the sound and the two letter group crunch enhances the visual. I have a data limit of about four, so I expect I will be at nine for a while.
I know original BFI is supposed to modify “over time”, but you don’t specify what time it’s modified over. As I’m recovering from a brain injury, my original probably is really pathetically low but it keeps going up – it’s at 300 now. When a person had to learn how to walk, talk, and eat again, I’m guessing the starting score ought stay pretty low.
My goal is to get my IQ back up to what it was before the brain injury. I think I’ve got some permanent damage to accessing certain memories, but it’s clear from psych tests they’ve done on me that that most if not all of the memories (mostly words but also faces) are indeed there; it’s accessing them that’s fallen by the wayside. There is also damage to the part of the brain that converts from short term memory to midterm such as working memory. I am hoping the separation of working memory from fluid intelligence done on the Double Gapmatch will increase my ability to access memories and convert from ST to medterm.

I do about one session per day. Is this sufficient? Also, Should if this is sufficient should I keep working on stage 3 sessions, or do some sessions from stage 1 and 2 also? I just want to make sure I am training in the best possible way to improve. MCAT in t-minus 2 weeks!

I took a standard intell test when I was about 14, scored 108. I am now 63 years old, been working for less than a month at mindsparke.com. Took the giqtest suggested from your list and was scored at 123. Don’t know if this is a fair comparison as tests are so far apart. However, as a classical violinist I have already noticed a real improvement in ability to learn fast passages of random notes. What used to take 20 minutes of concentrated work now seems to take 5-10 minutes. Sightreading is also better, so I am happy with my progress.
