Working-Memory Training Report – Valerie – Session 8

Session number: 8

Average n-back: 2.25

Duration (min.): 30

Definitely not feeling any smarter yet although n-2 makes much more sense than when I started and I do occasionally hit n-3, but never stay there. I find I get confused after a few sessions, everything tends to melt together – I know I’ve heard the letter / seen the square in that spot, but I can’t remember when. I am going to carry on (and on and on) but a few words of encouragement wouldn’t go amiss.

    Hello, Valerie.

You’ve come to the right place for words of encouragement.

By day 12 I predict you’ll be feeling smarter. You’ll begin to notice changes in your day-to-day life. Many people first notice that they’re better able to stay on task, or make little mental leaps. But each person experiences his or her own particular benefits.

The jump from level 2 to level 3 is a big jump. You’re moving up from a total of four items to six items and a sequence span of 6 seconds to 9 seconds (a fifty percent increase on both counts). This is actually the biggest proportional jump you’ll face as you move up through the levels.

At n=3, give yourself leeway to just remember the very first sequence of three as perfectly as you can, then take the set from there. If you can remember that first sequence, you’ve accomplished something tangible and positive. From that first sequence of three you’ll eventually build up to a second and a third, and so on.

Best wishes, and thanks for posting,
    Martin
