Question – Ed – Stage 3

Stage: 3

Session number: 1

Average n-back: 2.5

Hi,

I’ve just done my first session of stage 3. I kept fluctuating between n=3 and n=2. As I progressed through the session, I noticed it became harder to concentrate and I certainly became almost more confused (n=2 seemed harder to do even though I got them all correct for most of them). It was somewhat hypnotic.

Is this normal and is it a good sign……..or have I just worn myself out?

Many Thanks

Ed

    Hi, Ed.

This sounds familiar to me. It’s very hard to stay intensely focused for the entire training session. Sometimes focus comes and goes, sometimes it just deteriorates.

When you find your attention beginning to wander it can help to take a very short break and mentally regroup.

Getting the right answers while in a kind of hypnotic state is also something that people report. This is interesting because I think it points to two kinds of attentiveness — active, conscious attention, and passive, subconscious attention. Both are important and useful and both are being trained to varying degrees as our attentiveness shifts in and out.
