Working-Memory Training Report – Shaun – Session 65

Session number: 4-8

Average n-back: 5.00

Duration (min.): 35

Hi there BFPro Community:

I would like: both to increase my mean n-back score above my previous personal best of 5.55, and to develop a more fair, realistic, and accepting attitude toward the training and toward my body’s response to it.

My plan [for today] is:

(a) Carry out one training session of BFPro.

(b) Be on the look out for thoughts that trigger the anger response.

(c) Every two training blocks, make a note of an appropriate coping thought to counter the trigger thought.

starting n=5

n=5, 4 (congratulations!)
n=5, 3
n=4, 8 (Why am I swearing? I feel frustrated…)
n=5, 1
n=5, 4 (…and things aren’t going the way I would like…)*
n=5, 3
n=5, 3 (…but I can cope with the situation.)^
n=5, 3
n=5, 3 (Why I am swearing? I feel frustrated…)
n=6, 2
n=6, 4 (…and things aren’t going the way I would like…)*
n=5, 6
n=5, 5 (…but I can cope with the situation.)
n=5, 3
n=5, 5 (This is disappointing. I’d rather things were different…)**
n=4, 6
n=5, 2 (…but I’ll be all right.)^^
n=5, 4
n=5, 4 (Why am I swearing? [Well,] I feel frustrated… )

ending n=5, 4

mean n=5.00 (…and things aren’t going the way I would like…)

Well, I set a goal for myself, and I did it. I deserve credit for that. I

learned that two trigger thoughts were predominant today.

One was global inflammatory labeling: “This is stupid… I hate this game…” and other expletives. The coping thought is, “Why am I swearing? I feel frustrated, and things aren’t going the way I would like. But I can cope with the situation.”

The other was demanding / commanding: “I have to / must / should / ought to score n=6.” Or: “My jaw muscles shouldn’t be getting tense like this. I can’t believe it!” The coping thought is, “This is disappointing. I’d rather things were different, but I’ll be all right.”

In addition to learning the prominence of those two trigger thoughts, I also learned that remembering the coping thoughts, and making the effort to use them, has a powerful effect on helping me to relax and remain calm. And that’s what I really want.

To move on, I have decided I am going to open the BFPro program tomorrow in the morning. That is all. The plan is to just open the program, not to actually train, but to keep the ball rolling.

Footnotes:

*The jaw muscles are getting unpleasantly tight rather than loose.

^This includes coping thoughts, coping behaviors, and relaxation

strategies such as CCR, RI, RWT, and PMR.

**I’d rather be advancing to n=6 and n=7, rather than staying at n=5 or going to n=4. And I’d rather my face be relaxed & loose, rather than tight & tense.

^^That is, I can survive without reaching n=6 or 7, and I can live without relaxed & loose facial muscles. :)
