I’ve posted before about studies that pointed to a connection between neurogenesis and the effectiveness of anti-depressants.
This post over at neuroskeptic refers to new research that at the very least prompts a reexamination of a simple conclusion that anti-depressants work by stimulating neurogenesis. Researchers have found that Prozac stimulates neurogenesis significantly in young mice, but not so much in middle-aged mice and undetectably in senior mice.
But, as neuroskeptic points out, we don’t know whether the mice are feeling benefits from the Prozac, so we can’t really draw any firm conclusions…
And then there’s still the evidence that stress reduces neurogenesis and chronic stress contributes to depression…
